Paul Halmos, a great mathematical expositor

Martin Gardner, more or less single-handedly sustained and nurtured interest in recreational mathematics in the U.S. for a large part of the 20th century

David Hilbert, recognized as one of the most influential and universal mathematicians of the 19th and early 20th centuries

Garrett Birkhoff, substantially advanced American teaching and research in abstract algebra

Alfred Tarski, changed the face of logic in the twentieth century, especially through his work on the concept of truth and the theory of models
